I never knew sewing was such a tough job. I took a total of 75 mins to sew on two 4cm by 4 cm ranks on my uniform.

Well, at least, I accelerated immensely on my second piece.

For a moment, I almost realised my mother's pain. That when we were poor, my mum did this for a living. Now that our life is so much better, I seemingly forget about those times when we had to live in much poorer conditions.

Or maybe I didn't forget.

I have had a humble past.

Yesterday concluded my last duty as a guard and my "convenient" promotion to a guard commander.

Somehow, the thrill of responsibility is re-ignited.

Anyway, it's more or less 15 duties more and I'm done for this place!

Firstly, the typhoon was a disappointment. There was only slight rains and above average winds. Actually, I was expecting crazy tornados and thunderstorms. Apparently, the typhoon seemed to have missed us.

Nonetheless, land warning was given and everyone in the area, including the Taiwanese, were to stop work and school. That order carried out to us and I gained an extra day of off, although one confined in camp.

Nonetheless, I managed to get some work done by deleting my entire iTunes library and re-adding Chinese songs one by one and at the same time, including their artwork.

It was merciless, tiring work and I managed to go through 300 plus songs in the whole of today. Mind you, I had to go through each song to paste the artwork and edit the album name, artist name etc etc.

But I'm now proud of my iTunes and iTouch!

Pictures almost make it seem the singers are with me everywhere! :)

HUGE!

Yet another week has passed for my time in this foreign land. Nonetheless, it has been a pretty busy and eventful week for all of us. Perhaps, that is why I preferred to spend my time in camp this weekend doing nothing much.

Tuesday we had a hawker fare event. It was my second such event and as usual, I was assigned to be a VIP server. And like all times, I didn't get to do much serving myself because others were more enthusiastic than me.

And straight after Tuesday (which was Wednesday), we had to clean up all the living accomodation blocks for the incoming soldiers. Yes indeed, another set of training is starting, which is actually today. Having to clean up 2 huge blocks after a tiring late day of food event was beyond tiring.

Thursday we had a major happy hour. Food was a disappointment. But overall, it was average because it was mostly up to everyone to mingle around and down cans of beer.

Friday we had our first 4km training in preparation for a Taipei half marathon. I never realised until recently that a marathon meant strictly 42km.

And during the rest of the time, I was busy rushing documentation for a cargo delivery that came even before summer tour. And just as I finished this set, here comes another cargo delivery, even bigger than the previous.

Moreover, I haven't even place half of the new items on the shelves.

It's going to be another busy week ahead.

First signs of lightning and rain occur 5 seconds ago.

That being that the typhoon is 8 hours away.

It's going to be a frightening storm.

Mozilla Sunbird®

A great offline calendar program I can used to plan my days!

Plus, it's open source!

4km training was almost like 10km to me today. My legs turned out to be really cannot-make-it. I think I have left my muscles untested for simply too long.

And it ended up I became super tired for the rest of the day. I really HAD to take a 10 min nap in the store since I missed my lunch break due to my guard duty today.

OH YA!

By the way, news reports stated a GIGANTIC typhoon will hit us on probably Saturday or Sunday. I saw how impossibly huge the typhoon was from satellite images. Moreover, it was heading straight for where I live and it would cover the entire of Taiwan (yes, that's how big it is)".

I have a feeling it's going to be a tremendous experience!

Let's hope the storm don't blow my room windows open. Later I fly out while sleeping.

By pure luck, I came out top in a throwing dart competition held in our monthly happy hour today.

Maybe Lady Luck hasn't completely left me yet. :)

Food today was, in my opinion, vastly insufficient! I was looking forward to some fried finger food but it was just a buffet that was the main course. How I wish there could be more!

And I really went with the mindset of a glutton and enjoy myself through eating.

Too bad I couldn't consume much alcohol as there is marathon training tomorrow. Not that I want to get crazy drunk again, but it was the probably the last time I could drink with some guys who are ending their tour next month.

Well, looks like I have to look elsewhere for gluttony.

I admit, I'm neglecting a lot of aspects of my bunk.

There are corners where dust have gathered, patches of walls where paint has peeled, too much dust in the air-conditioner, cobwebs collecting in the corners of the ceilings and many more ugly sceneries that are lying to be discovered.

In truth, it is due to the fact that I still do not treat it as my room. I don't really know why I have this feeling, but when you feel that you will be gone in a few months, you don't really make an effort to decorate or sterilise the entire room.

Besides, I'm not the only resident in this room. Though up till now, there has never been a cleaner and tidier room mate.

Nonetheless, after all this talk, I'm still going to make some small little changes to this room, just to occupy myself, make myself happier and enhance the room a little.

Now, now, here is a glimpse into my proposed little changes:

1. A working new wall clock

2. A stereo set with FM tuner

3. Bean chairs/inflatable sofa

4. Personal alarm clock

5. More posters

6. More pillows!

I think having a bunk that I have to maintain has cultivate a certain value in me.

For now, I know for sure that when I am back to my own room in Singapore, I would do the cleaning and decoration myself, instead of relaying on my mother like I used to.

In fact, I'm going the first few days of late December re-decorating my room and cleaning it up. And I think I have quite a few ideas already.

My warrant officer warned me today that my store is in shambles. He explained that if my store were to go through a logistic readiness inspection, it would fail terribly and even though I have already ORD-ed by then, I can still be liable for any faults.

And then one of the sergeants had to add it that one of his men got called back from his civilian life and was charged because he lost a set of army binoculars (which are very advanced and can cost up to thousands of dollars).

I think I have do more overtime and take more initiative in my store now.

Previously, I was conflicted with the choice of whether I should put in so much of my free time and energy into the army. At the end of the day, it would be a mere two years of my time and no matter how hardworking I am, there wouldn't be any A level grading or whatsoever.

I admit that the "after ORD liability" got me scared and all. However, I also considered that it was a matter of pride that I should not give others a chance to criticise on my quality of work.

That store is an extension of me. It's time I turn it into my own little legacy.

Satay. Prawn mee. Hokkien mee. Fried oyster. Chicken rice. Bak kut teh. Bo bo cha cha. Nasi lemak.

All food I miss so much and yet made available to us through today's hawker fare.

Tough running a hawker fare but it was made a hundred times simpler by the combined efforts of everyone. I'm starting to believe in the power of a team again.

I have been doing things alone for too long.

Everyone helped and was addicted to the spirit of helping and that is what was most amazing about the whole event. Even someone who is normally extremely lazy is caught up in the momentum of the team and carried along and thus inherit some of our hardworking traits.

It was like a virus, abeit a positive one.

I think it was something like JJC OGLs and facilitators. Hardwork, passion and enthusiasm became an infection.

But for now I need some rest. Too bad I'm working tomorrow again.

Well, it should be named hawker fare number-dunno-what already since they have been doing this since forever. It's just that it's my second time doing a hawker fare and it looks like there wasn't much of a preparation this time round.

Basically, we prepare several stalls of Singaporean food for our Taiwanese guests who have helped us in one way or another throughout the years. Food include laksa, fried oyster, bak kut teh and chicken rice. Perhaps the enticing point of this event was the food itself, prepared wonderfully by our gracious and skilled chefs.

And most of what we have to do is just pour in the gravy or heat up the food. Not very complicated rocket science.

I'm looking forward to the leftovers. At the same time, I'm dreading the huge amount of utensils that need to be washed at the end of the day.

I'd wager we have to work late tonight. There goes my grocery shopping day again.

And anyway, my duties are food preparation (which meant poking infinite satay sticks through slippery pieces of marinated meat) and serving the VIP guests (this one I hate). Wish me luck!

Testing my latest post from ScribeFire.

Looking nifty and convenient!

Sunday, July 20, 2008

I backed up the entirety of my Blogger posts yesterday after browsing through some of my archives. Truth be told, I have stopped writing in my diary because it simply got so tiring to write instead of type the many thoughts and events of the day.

Blogging is fast and simple, though I cannot write about matters that are sensitive and to be kept a secret.

I wager I would still write as often as possible. And in addition, I would regularly take photos just to ensure I accompany my daily events portrayal with some pictures. That would make a great nostalgic too, wouldn't it?

Anyway, after 3 weeks of not exercising, I returned to the gym for two sets of arm exercises. And I cannot tell you how breathless and tired I was after a tiny workout.

I got so much to catch up in terms of physical fitness.

And oh ya, today is guard duty day again! (on a Sunday) Will be staying up for the whole of tonight again!

They say true friendships are hard to come by. If they ever do pass by you, hold on to them, never let go and nurture them to the best of all it can be.

For me, friendships have always been an easy thing. I guess I'm lucky enough to have good, kind friends surround me all the time. I took out some time just now to list now exactly how many people I would considered close friends.

The list is truly longer than I expected. Incredibly, when they say one has limits to how many close friends they can have in their life, the amount of soul mates I have proves everything wrong.

Distance does not weaken friendships, it merely makes the heart ache and crave for that bond to be refilled again.

As my time in Taiwan dwindle down to 5 months, I anticipate the many chances ahead whereby old friendships would be rekindled and new ones acquired.

That's my kind of life.

It revolves around... people... and love.

Photobucket

I remembered that I used to enjoy war films more than anything when I was a kid. It wasn't the overexcessive explosions and tanks that mesmerise me. Rather, it was the extreme human emotions involved in a bloody battlefield.

Now that I grew up, I discover my favourite genre of movies were epic, blockbuster, comic remakes of well-known superheros. I enjoyed Spiderman, adored Superman and marvelled at X-Men.

And yesterday night, I was delighted to catch The Dark Knight one day after it's official release! Never mind I had to strain my neck with my seats at the second row of the cinema.

After all the recent superhero films that was released lately, The Dark Knight pales in comparison regarding action. However, The Dark Knight shines in the area of storyline and metaphorical expression. It's a deep movie, and you have to be in a pretty deep mindset to enjoy it.

Fans of Batman would go ga-ga over the big-screen portrayal of the Bat's inner soul and Joker's symbolical sayings. I, for one, went to orgasmic status several times during the movie.

Well, it was that great, at least for me. Some friends didn't enjoy it, but nonetheless I think everyone should at least give a try!

My first real typhoon is here!!!

I swear I heard some metal snap in the winds and rains just now.

Yes, it's that scary.

There are 3 working washing machines in the camp.

There are currently 30+ people struggling to get their special moments with it.

But I got a shrewd plan...

I'm gonna wake up at 3am tonight just to wash my clothes.

-_-"

Or else I'm really afraid they are gonna stay unwashed till the next week :( EWWW! I seriously don't want my bunk to smell any worse than what it is now.

Oh ya, I'M JUST BACK FROM SUMMER TOUR! Arrived at 6.08pm today in fact, together with a bunch of new clothes and some wonderful experiences!

Been to tons of places, taken lots of pictures, did new things like snorkeling, Go-Kart, banana boating and BBQing oysters.

It's basically a 4 days, 3 nights tour around the southern part of Taiwan, which is known for having nice beaches, good water sports and much hotter weather.

Our female tour guide was nice. Bus was comfy enough. And some hotels really impressed me. And some events were really fun, like the trip to Ken Ting. I wanted to do more shopping but my cough just prevented me from spending my nights too late.

Henceforth, I will do a chronological run-through of my adventures in southern Taiwan!

And for your information, this would be the last offical "tour" before I return to Singapore this fall!

Day 1

Photobucket

Mister Bus-mate! 90% of the time playing his look-quite-fun game on PSP. On the contrary, I spend most of my time sleeping and catching the immense collection of movies on board the bus.

(Can you imagine? They have like, almost every show and they already have whatever's showing in the cinemas)

We set off at 6am in the morning and we were slated for a 6 hours ride to the very southern of Taiwan! Long ride indeed!

Photobucket

First stop was somewhere called Maopitao. It's basically a cliff area where there is one huge rock that looks like a cat gazing off at the sea.

Cat wasn't that interesting. Climbing the cliffs and enjoying the breathtaking view was.

Photobucket

Mr. Andy.

Photobucket

Perry. JC student, same day to go back to Singapore, same age... I'm treasuring every person here that has that amount of similarities with me.

Photobucket

If you look really really closely, you can see the cat in this picture.

Photobucket

Budok.

Photobucket

My boss!

Photobucket

Nice right? I bet you are jealous that you couldn't take in the fresh sea breeze like I could.

Photobucket

Chua Poh Long! Someone who has came on the same day with me in Taiwan (I saw him already in Changi Airport and how incredible that we were strangers back then) but slated to leave Taiwan either this or next month.

It's immensely emotional to think that someone you spend everyday of 9 months with would be soon gone from your life forever.

I guess that's the curse of this place. People who you see literally everyday... would suddenly be gone in one morning.

Photobucket

Ahh, we very happy ar.

Photobucket

We travelled to a park-like area that required tickets to be bought. There wasn't much of sightseeing except this impressive estate far off in the distance.

Photobucket

And we had to climb a hill of take an up close picture. Then, guess what. At the top of the view, the reward is a souvenir shop. How commercial-y...

Photobucket

Behold! My new slippers bought in preparation for the great and sandy beach!

I also bought a number of shirts and a singlet just to prep up for the hotter summer in the weeks ahead.

Photobucket

WELCOME TO KENTING, the hottest beach area in Taiwan!

Photobucket

As you can see, lots of shops, lots of beach stuff, lots of people...

Photobucket

Not to forget food. Sadly, I couldn't eat most of them due to my ravaging cough.

Photobucket

Believe it or not, there's this bun restaruant that blasts clubbing music. And you did hear it, they sell... buns.

Plus, there's a REAL, LIVING DJ spinning on the second floor balcony. And they are selling... buns.

Photobucket

This lady over here is incredible. Using very basic equipment, she could put your Chinese name in the form of dragons, phoenix, and what have you, all in less than 5 minutes!!!

Needless to say, I got one! And it's very nice!

Watching her at work was already worth the price that we paid for the finished piece.

Day 2

The morning of day 2 was spent at a center of water sports run by some enterpreneuring locals. What they offer was a 3 sports-in-one package, which were snorkeling, banana boating and speed boating.

Snorkeling was a refreshing experience. It was really incredibly mystical to gaze at the sea beds and notice for the first time that there are infinite beautiful marvels even at the bottom of the earth.

Banana boating was exciting because they made us sit on this long rubber boat which would suddenly capsize as the speedboat pulled on it ahead and do twists and turns in the waters.

Having a boat capsize experience was pretty... amazing.

Photobucket

We spent afternoons at a marine biological centre. It was a huge tourist centre which contained real living marine animals. It was incredible!

Photobucket

But I spent my time taking pictures with non-live ones.

Photobucket

Whales quite big ar.

Photobucket

Most of the places in the centre were like this. So camera flashes wasn't really allowed.

Photobucket

And they have giant squids!

Photobucket

This guy just wanted to take a picture up close with a spashy whale and get wet.

Photobucket

We then proceeded to the biggest shopping mall in Kaohsiung City called the Dream Mall. They had a ferris wheel on the roof of the building.

But personally, I think our VivoCity is many times bigger and has more people than this mall.

This mall was virtually... empty.

Maybe students don't go shopping on weekdays in Taiwan.

Photobucket

Hotel that night was damn impressive. That is a self-playing piano!

Photobucket

The hotel lobby... almost felt like a real expensive hotel!

Photobucket

The name!

Photobucket

Although it had been a super tiring day and my body was threatening to cease functioning, we ventured out to Kaohsiung night markets for some shopping.

Photobucket

Lots of people and wares on sale! Very nice!

But I went back early due to my worsening cough. I guess it was due to over-activity on my part. By 9pm, I was already coughing so much that there my throat bled and I couldn't even think probably, let alone shop.

Well that's all for day 2!

Day 3

Photobucket

Day 3 was rather boring. We went to some rural area called Meinong. They introduced their cultures, plantations and history to us.

Photobucket

Frankly, I wasn't interested because it sounded like another typical rural area. I wanted to at least go to some place with a mystical or impactful history.

Photobucket

Nonetheless, we took some time with exploring some sites!

Photobucket

Next stop: Cigu Salt Mountain! Really made of salt!!!

Photobucket

And don't get those eyes so wide open. This is not a real snowscape in hot, blazing summer. It's salt you see that you mistake as snow!

I didn't really get to hear the origins of the salt mountain as I was messing with my PSP back in the bus. So all I did was just wander around aimlessly.

Photobucket

Tour guide was nice to change our iternary for the better because she felt visiting a castle next would be too boring for us.

So we proceeded to a HUGE oyster farm for a visit and unlimited oyster consumption!

Photobucket

The ferry ride turned out to be excruciatingly painful because the auntie who farmed those oysters have a super irritating speaking tone.

To add in, the ride was painfully slow and long.

Photobucket

We finally reach and discovered.... no one on a lonely beach!

Photobucket

But can get to see some other stuff la. My apologies though, I didn't had much of a opportunity to take other pictures because I was still madly coughing away.

The oyster meal later was nice. But as I didn't want to agitate my weak immune system, I only ate four.

I remembered that there was once, I ate seven raw oysters and ended up nearly dead with three days of vomiting and diarrhea.

Photobucket

We had our dinner at an amazing place. The entire restaruant was framed on trees and rocks.

Photobucket

An interesting eatery if you ever get to visit!

And food was slightly above average. The restaruant itself makes it worth the visit.

Photobucket

Wei wei and me!

Photobucket

More vanity!

Photobucket

Mr. Kevin and me happily aiming a cannon at you.

And that ended our journey day 3. We landed at a Tainan City hotel that was nothing impressive and had not much attractions in the city itself. So I basically spent the night resting, which was well deserved.

Day 4

Photobucket

Last day of tours are always planned to be the most exciting! We crashed at Jian Hu Shan theme park for some water sports and attraction rides!

Photobucket

But actually I never take a single ride or played a single water sport because I was both too humji and lazy at the same time. Plus, I scared myself real bad at the theme park last winter tour.

Photobucket

Scariest thing I sat on was a ferris wheel that slightly shook as we went to the top!

I spent most of the time drifting around and exploring this and that. Not very fun la, I was basically just looking forward to returning to camp.

And here I am now!

Summer tour has been a blast to go to, though I still wished I was healthier, more willing to try things and braver. I also wished I took more pictures of myself with others and at places.

Well, till the next unofficial tour... I would be working again! A typhoon will hit us either tonight or tomorrow. Other than that, life would return to normal and we would preparing for more camp events up ahead!

It's been a long blog post. I hope you enjoyed reading!

I'm HAPPY to report, I'M FINALLY FEELING A TINGE OF BEING HEALTHY AGAIN!

After 12 days spent in "near death", I can't tell you how much refreshing the feeling of not having a heavy head when you are out about is like. Frankly speaking, I haven't even been happy for a moment these 12 days.

NOW IT'S GONNA CHANGE! Catch that, virus!

Oh ya, I would be going for SAF-partly-subsidised Summer Tour from tomorrow onwards. I would be on hiatus for four days. Probably will hit home base late Thursday night.

I am so so so gonna enjoy myself totally! I have suffered long enough!

Headed down to Hsinchu city for some preparation shopping last night. 2 hours of shopping and I was dead tired and coughing like a mad man.

Nonetheless, I bought half of what I needed!

Photobucket

I forgot the most important stuff though, gonna head out to get it later again.

Till then, congrats me for healing up again!

Friday, July 11, 2008

Right now in my life, I'm lacking two important things according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Health and relationships.

I'm still dying from flu.

I'm still craving to have friends surround me again.

I feel really down these days. So down that sometimes, I take to prayers.

Friday, July 4, 2008

Warm soya bean milk never felt better in the mornings!

Now that I'm determinedly off clubbing, mornings have been great. Hangovers are over! And I have lesser clothes to wash too!

Most importantly, now I have a lot more money in my bank account!

Whee!

Computer games have been my time-occupier since last week. I'm firmly believing in helping people in their games by teaming up with them. I think that a easier time to get through those frustrating levels would keep them playing, which in terms benefit me because I would have more companions to play with.

Then again, I think I should still credit it to the developers of the game itself!

Photobucket

It's bloody exciting to have my Magic Find gear set up and going. Now a total of 243% Better Chance of Finding Magic Items and counting! All thanks to everyone in camp, I now have 6 Perfect Topaz!

Photobucket

It's due time I find some nice stuff for my Hammerdin. I think he's gonna be the only guy who can get through Hell difficulty on his own.

Plough on!

There's no real indication of fever.

But I do feel cold in air-con rooms if I stay too long. Yet, my breath feels uncomfortably warm and there's a nagging throbbing in my head.

I keep drinking water but it's no use. It's not getting any better.

I think I need my body to fight harder.

Please, please, please let me get well again.

Everything depends on this.

Tears warming in my eyes as I watch her go.

Photobucket

Thank you people. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
